SEQUOIA DINER

What better way to christen our blog than with some breakfast lover’s praise for Sequoia Diner. It’s a source of pride that this place is walking distance from Unsolicited’s HQ (but just far enough to walk off some of that delicious breakfast or delectable lunch).

Located on MacArthur Ave in Oakland’s Laurel District, Sequoia has been putting it down in the best way, by making simple food, with the best ingredients, and an attention level to cooking that ignores none of the details that separate good food from great.

Enough of the pomp & circumstance however, the first item on the menu I had there was the pecan sticky bun. Not only am I a doughnut and sticky bun addict but upon discovering that Sequoia makes everything in house (bread to bacon) I had to find out where the bun ranked, not that I’ve been keeping literal track of the thousands of pastries I’ve consumed through life. I typically don’t ascribe to “one of the best” kind of phrases because it’s chicken shit. It means nothing and can be associated with almost everything. What I will say is that the sticky bun was the best I’ve ever had. Period. Sweet, sweet sticky thing that the Ohio Players would be proud of. This has been backed up by the fact that it consistently sells out prior to prime brunch time (noon-1); so if you’re aiming for one, get there early.

I’ve also had the eggs Benedict (housemade ham was crisply tangy without being tough or chewy and was the perfect taste/texture contrast to the muffin, egg and hollandaise), country breakfast (sucker for country potatoes), waffle with strawberries (light, airy, succulent with the maple), beef hash with carrot salad, the homemade buttermilk biscuit and the chocolate chip cookies. Yesterday’s visit began with a blood orange mimosa (that’s how you start a Saturday!). Also, Unsolicitd is a firm believer in the dining experience only being as good as how you’re treated/served, and every one of the staff are cheerful and genuinely interested in making your visit the best it can be.

Sequoia is and is not news. They’ve been highlighted already by the likes of Thrillist, the Oakland Tribune and the SF Chronicle as one of the best brunch spots in the Bay. And one of these days I’ll manage to walk there and back.
